I just want to say that, a long time ago, when I was an animator in Disney, chained to a desk, having to draw cute talking animals, I was fucking depressed, and this music was the only thing that really saved me. They can make a manic-depressive happy, they did it, and they just spoke to anyone who felt strange and weird. I just want to thank them for inspiring me and so many other people, for so long”. - Tim Burton, NME Ceremony for The Cure’s “Godlike Genius” award, 2009.

Smith added the band was “flattered, surprised and pleased” to get this prize, with Burton “making all the more special”.

Tim Burton later stated their music was “always in the back of my mind, probably rolling around there, somewhere in my soul.”

He actually had asked Robert Smith for contribution in the soundtrack for Edward Scissorhands, but as The Cure were recording Disintegration at the time, he declined, although they had the script in the studio according to keyboardist Roger O’Donnell.
